After reading Chris Daniele's post Newsvine: News Blog or Myspace for Adults I really got to thinking about why I even use Newsvine. Certainly I want to be informed, and the prospect of doing it in a slick new "Web 2.0" enviroment is appealing. But how many of us actually use Newsvine for more than headlines. 99% of the time I do not dig any deeper then the front page of the site, scanning the headlines. I rarely use the commenting system, and I never seed stories.

I'd be very interested to see some sort of graphical statistic on the userbase precentage that is just like me. So is newsvine the respectable grownup version of myspace? That remains to be seen, though it sure does feel that way some times.

I take the opposite approach: I come here for the user posts and comment a lot. I've already got 17 RSS feeds I check for headlines, and I still visit Digg-though not as frequently. I don't seed stories either, mostly because a lot of what I see appears here in some form or another.

I explore several different sections, network out using the doppelganger frequently, and comment whenever I can add worth to the discussion. I don't view this at all as a "grown-up" MySpace considering the push to value things only if they provide added value to Newsvine as a whole. If you write things that have little importance and are/or are not written in a mature fashion you'll recieve little attention, little support, and perhaps even a condescending comment or two.

I think this will become even more effective once the ad-revenue starts to flow and people put even more effort into worthwhile content.
